In 1972, the first Hoa Hậu Áo Dài Pageant, organized by Madame Nguyễn Thị Mai Anh - First Lady of President Nguyễn Văn Thiệu of the Republic of Vietnam, was held in Saigon. This pioneering event marked the beginning of a cherished tradition. Today, Miss Vietnam California-Hoa Hậu Áo Dài is honored to continue to uphold the rich heritage of the Hoa Hậu Áo Dài legacy.

The phrase “Hoa Hậu Áo Dài” was first introduced in 1977 y the Vietnamese Student Association (VSA) at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB).  Under the visionary leadership of Phạm Tâm Hoe, Cao Bá, and Trần Tuấn Bắc, the very first Hoa Hậu Áo Dài Long Beach Pageant was brought to life. 

With a starting budget of just $6,000, the pageant planted the seeds for what would grow into a beloved tradition, inspiring generations and paving the way for future Vietnamese American pageants across the country

Northern California proudly held its first-ever Hoa Hậu Áo Dài pageant, hosted by Mr. Dan Do, Esq. in San Jose. That historic year, the crown was awarded to Queen Nghiêm Thanh Trúc, marking the beginning of a proud legacy of Vietnamese-American cultural representation in Northern California.
